Why Move to Homewood?

Big Picture.  Why Move to Homewood?

Located in Jefferson County Alabama, and home to just over 26,000 residents, Homewood was officially incorporated in 1926.

People are drawn to Homewood for its small-town charm, walkability, great schools, and central proximity to Downtown Birmingham and other major municipalities, employers, and medical complexes.

Living in Homewood means you are always less than twenty minutes from anywhere.  Homewood has multiple grocery stores, pharmacies, restaurants, shopping, parks, and playgrounds all within walking or biking distance – which means you might just forget what it’s like to ever sit in traffic again.
Each weekend there’s fun runs, festivas, and farmer’s market to shop at.  Homewood has a surprising number of eclectic restaurants and bars - award-winning ‘meat and three’s to five-star steak and fish bistros, beer joints, and cocktails lounges to enjoy.

What do Home Values Look Like?

In Homewood, most two-to-three-bedroom single-family homes start around $300,000 and can go for as much as a million or more.  On average, $595,000 will get you an older but solid and cute three-bedroom, two-bath home of approximately 1600-1800 sqft.

Some condos and townhomes exist in the area, but not many, and they don’t usually sell cheap.  New Homes often price well into the mid-one-million-dollar range, and it’s not uncommon to see homeowners tear down their ailing homes to rebuild new ones in their place.

Renting is trickier as rental properties don’t become vacant very often.  If they do, you’re likely to see rental rates of $1800 to 3000 per month depending on the size of the home.

One thing particular to Homewood – the area was developed on smaller residential lots at a time before garages were necessary.  Even today, most Homewood residents park on uncovered driveways or along the street.

Schools and Learning.

Five schools (Shades Cahaba Elementary, Edgewood Elementary, Hall Kent Elementary, Homewood Middle, and Homewood High) make up Homewood City Schools and they house 4,217 students on a daily basis.

Depending on the ranking site, Homewood schools regularly secure Top 5 rankings for Alabama, always ranking well on test scores, college readiness, teacher quality, graduation rates, clubs, activities, and more.
Most schools fall within easy walking distance to it’s students' homes, so it’s common to see “walking carpools” of parents chaperoning groups of students back and forth before and after school.  By 3:30 each afternoon, students fill up the ice cream shops along Oxmoor.

There are several colleges and universities nearby Homewood: Samford University, University of Alabama at Birmingham or UAB, and Birmingham Southern University, to name a few.
Fun Stuff Around Town.

One of the best-kept secrets of Homewood Residents is the Parks and Recreation Centers.  There are five city parks, two swimming pools, three gyms, a fitness center, a senior center, and multiple sports parks and fields year-round!  Homewood City offers all sorts of organized sports for kids, too - baseball, football, soccer, swim team, basketball, lacrosse, golf, cheerleading, tennis, wrestling, pickleball, softball, and volleyball.

Annual fun events like We Love Homewood Day, the Halloween Witches Ride, the Christmas Parade, weekend fun runs, or the West Homewood Summertime Farmers Market bring its residents out to enjoy each other’s company and celebrate being a community together.

However, you don’t need a special event to come out and enjoy Homewood.  Looking for a special gift or a quiet place to check out books and have a cup of coffee?  People come from all over Birmingham to shop, meet friends and have lunch.
