Is it Time to De-clutter?

Have you noticed how fast stuff can stack up around the house the longer you live there? With a busy household, even the most diligent de-clutterers can find themselves outpaced.  If you've been thinking about doing a little spring cleaning and wondered what in the heck to do with all your extra things, we've compiled a list of three locations that accept used and unwanted household goods.  Some even offer a pick-up service or have a convenient covered drive-thru and volunteers to help you unload it all.

The Do's and Don'ts of Donating:

Donating your used and unwanted items to someone in need makes so much practical and environmental sense!  Plus it warms the heart to know your belongings may go on help a family in need!  You might be surprised to learn, however, that not everything makes for a good donation.  As an occasional donation center volunteer, I've learned that some things just can't be reused. So, here's the skinny on what I've learned is great to donate and what might need to hit the garbage bin instead!

DO DONATE CLOTHES: Winter Coats, In-Season Unstained Clothes, Clean Shoes, Ties, Belts, Nice Handbags.

DONT: Old socks, torn and stained clothes, and panties that have once hugged your fanny are unsuitable for donation.

DO DONATE HOUSE GOODS: Pots and Pans, Dishes, Glassware, Eating Utensils, Working Small Kitchen Appliances, Clean Towels and Bedding.

DONT: Some donation centers accept furniture, and some do not.  You might call ahead before loading up that Barcalounger and heading over.  The same goes for Old Mattresses.

DO DONATE BABY GEAR:  Cribs, Playpens, High-chairs, Rockers, Car Seats, Clean Baby Clothes and Blankets, and Gently Used Toys, Books and Games..

DONT: When it comes to baby stuff, clean is always a plus! Old bottles and breast pumps may not be accepted.

DO DONATE HOME RENOVATION MATERIALS:  The Habitat For Humanity ReStore accepts used, removed, or leftover materials from home renovations.

  • I bought my first home and the process couldn’t have been easier because of Michelle Shackelford. Michelle helped me from the very beginning to the very end. When looking for the right home Michelle listened to all of my concerns and needs. Her attention to detail and her reassuring support gave me a sense of relief during the entire process. She answered all my questions and explained every detail. I couldn’t have asked for a better realtor.
